Sooners can’t be contained

NORMAN — Oklahoma won its seventh straight game in a very familiar fashion. Matt Oberste had another huge night at the plate. The only difference in Wednesday’s 15-8 victory over Oral Roberts at L. Dale Mitchell Park was those around him in the batting order did, as well.

Oberste hit safely in his 23rd straight game this by going 3 for 4 with four RBIs. However, Jack Mayfield went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Hector Lorenzana went 3 for 5 and drove in three runs.

The Sooners’ offensive onslaught was so extensive that it scored in every inning to complete a two-game sweep of the Golden Eagles (5-15).

OU (19-4) needed the production at the plate. For the second straight game, it had to rally from a deficit in the middle innings. Oral Roberts led 7-6 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Then Dylan Neal smacked a two-run double to give the Sooners the lead for good, and they never looked back.

Reliever Billy Waltrip (1-1) got the victory. The junior left-hander got the Sooners out of the fifth inning. He walked two and hit a batter, but he also picked up three strike outs.

Pepe Gomez (0-2) took the loss for the Golden Eagles. He entered in the fifth inning and allowed the game-tying and go-ahead runs on Neal’s RBI double.

Wednesday’s win served as the final tuneup before Big 12 Conference play begins Friday when TCU comes to Norman for a three-game series.

OU announced Wednesday the start time for the series opener has been moved up to 2 p.m.
