Sooners still on top

NORMAN — Coming off the heels of its most impressive win of the season, the Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team jumped to No. 1 in the latest GymInfo rankings, which were released Monday.

It's the third time in the

program’s history it has earned the top-ranking. The other two times both came in 2010.

The Sooners entered last week No. 2 behind Florida. But after pummeling then No. 5 UCLA Saturday, they moved No. 1 and the Gators dropped to No. 2. Michigan, Alabama and LSU round out the top five.

In the win over the Bruins, Oklahoma posted a score of 198.375, the highest cumulative team score in NCAA women's gymnastics since 2004.

OU is the last undefeated team left in nation at 15-0. It maintained its No. 1 beam ranking with a 49.395 average, well ahead of second-place Florida at 49.185. The Sooners are also ranked No. 3 on floor (49.340), No. 3 on bars (49.360) and No. 6 on vault (49.320).

Individually, four Sooners are ranked in the top 20 in the NCAA individual all-around rankings.

Junior Taylor Spears is No. 2, senior Brie Olson is No. 4, Erica Brewer is No. 8 and Keelet Kmieciak is No. 18.

The Sooners are also the only team in the nation to have five different gymnasts ranked in the top 25 in any event, a feat they’ve secured on both the bars and beam.

In the beam rankings, four Sooners occupy the top eight spots, Spears at No. 1, Olson at No. 3, Brewer at No. 4 and sophomore Lauren Alexander at No. 8. Junior Madison Mooring ranks No. 17.

The Sooners resume their season at 7 p.m. Friday against Texas Women’s University, in Denton, Texas.
