PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — First it was No. 1 Oklahoma over No. 16 Georgia 5-0, then it was the Sooners over No. 19 Arizona 5-0.
First it was Keilani Ricketts in the circle, backing up a pair of no-hitters she’d already thrown this season with a one-hitter at the Bulldogs, then it was Michelle Gascoigne throwing a three-hitter and striking out 12 Wildcats.
Welcome to OU’s dominance in the early softball season, this time around on Day 1 of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Sooners moved to 12-0 on the season and 6-0 against ranked teams, outscoring those ranked teams 41-0 along the way.
While Gascoigne closed with a dozen strikeouts, Ricketts retired 10 Bulldogs on strikes and walked only one.
The opener was marked by a 2-for -3, three-RBI performance from catcher Jessica Shults. Gascoigne’s victory was marked by a long ball eruption against Arizona pitchers Estela Pinon and Nancy Bowling.
In the fifth inning, Shults, Ricketts and Jessica Vest all went deep.
Today, OU meets UC-Santa Barbara at 5:30 p.m., followed by Nebraska at 8 p.m.
