Expanding shelter will need more volunteers

NORMAN — Norman has its share of four-legged animals and two-legged supporters. The vote in support of a new animal shelter was Exhibit A. More than 75 percent of the 9,205 voters said yes to the $3 million shelter plans.

Now that those supporters have pledged their ad valorem tax dollars, they are being asked to sign up for some volunteer time. An organizational meeting is planned for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall, 201 W. Gray St.

During the bond campaign in fall 2011, shelter proponents said nearly 40 percent of dogs and 60 percent of cats impounded at the facility were euthanized.

The number of animals in Norman is expected to increase by more than 30 percent in the next 20 years. The new facility will need help, and the director says they’re already understaffed.

Like many other nonprofits and government offices, they will turn to volunteers to help carry the load. We have no doubt Norman folks will step forward and donate some time for their four-legged neighbors.
