Thanks to NPS for holding open house event

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

Just a note of thanks to NPS for holding our first Community Open House.  I was a guest at Irving Middle School.  The principal, Ms. Linda Baxter, was friendly and professional.  I was interested in particular to see the location for the Norman Public Library book Kiosk.  Mr. Joey Slate, Assistant Principal, took me on a personal and informative tour of the kiosk site as well as the school.   Mr. Slate was quite cordial and informative. While at Irving, I also had the occasion to visit with staff about the number of school children requiring assistance to obtain school lunches as well as the number of children taking Regional Food Bank back packs home on Fridays.  It was clear from my discussions that the need for such assistance for our school children is growing.  As I am sure you know, Oklahoma has reached a six-year high, according to data released last month by the U.S. Census Bureau.  The data reveal that more than one in six Oklahomans - and almost one in four children - now live in poverty in Oklahoma.
