NORMAN — Thousands of Rotarians from around the world are gathered in Bangkok, Thailand, this week for their annual international meeting. Several Norman Rotarians are there, including Ron D. Burton, president-elect for 2013-2014.
Mr. Burton, an attorney and retired president of the University of Oklahoma Foundation, was officially named president-elect this past October. A formal vote on the selection is expected this week.
It’s quite an honor for Mr. Burton and Oklahoma. Internationally, there are more than 33,000 clubs in over 200 countries. The 1.2 million men and women donate their expertise, time and funds to support local and international projects.
Mr. Burton will officially take office at Rotary’s next international meeting in May 2013 in Lisbon, Portugal. Rotary’s flagship project is the eradication of polio. Only a few cases in a handful of countries remain. It could happen on Mr. Burton’s watch.
