A real eye opener for visitors

Norman business, education and civic leaders spent the morning back in school Tuesday. They were serving as "Principals for a Day" as part of a Norman Public School Foundation program.

It's been years since many of us were in the principal's office and usually for not-so-good reasons. Tuesday was an eye-opener, with visitors reporting being impressed by the advances in technology, caliber of educators, respectful students and outdated facility needs.

The tour involved every Norman principal and every school. The rationale is similar to the bond issue. Every school is on the list for improvements. The biggest single item on Tuesday's bond issue is a $16 million elementary school in southeast Norman.

We think more groups should try and sponsor "Teacher for a Day," or "Principal for a Day." If you haven't been to a public school in years, it's time to take a look at what's inside.
