Sunday's story about a group of local women who decided to hold a bake sale for the United Way of Norman reminds us of just how creative folks can be.
The United Way drive, stalled at about 70 percent, will end later this month. Organizers are hoping to get close to the $2.15 million goal to fund local social service agencies and programs.
The bakers, most of whom are stay-at-home moms, wanted to help reach that goal but had more time than cash to contribute. So they cooked the idea of selling their favorite confections to others in the community with the proceeds going to United Way.
The Web site, www.confectionsforacause.com, allows donors to pre-order some holiday treats and pick them up at the United Way offices Dec. 14.
It's a tough year for the drive and for all non-profits. Donations are down and some of the agencies that rely on state contracts also have seen that funding decline.
The women's project hit its $1,000 goal and reminds us that we all have some talent to offer in hopes of keeping Norman the caring community we all know it to be.
