A couple of local organizations are encouraging shopping with local merchants this year.
The state Agriculture Department is promoting a range of Made In Oklahoma products. Separately, a new group associated with an alternative newspaper in Oklahoma City is pushing a "shop local" campaign.
It's patterned after the Austin, Texas, "Keep Austin Weird," campaign, according to Jeffri-Lynn Dyer, associate publisher of the Oklahoma Gazette. She told a Norman business group the money spent with local merchants turns over in the community, producing more jobs and commerce.
Agriculture officials said Oklahoma gifts include wine, meats and cheeses, honey, nuts, coffee, soaps, baked goods and syrup. They're suggesting baskets for out-of-state gifts.
