Safety group rates lawmakers

An Oklahoma consumer and patient advocacy organization handed out report cards for state legislators this week and Cleveland County lawmakers got a range of grades.

The non-profit Oklahoma Center for Consumer and Patient Safety rated legislators on measures that it says would strengthen laws to protect elderly, combat identity theft, increase safety requirements for children and consumers.

State Reps. Bill Nations and Wallace Collins, both Democrats, received 93 percent scores on the 16 bills the group charted. Reps. Scott Martin and Randy Terrill, both Republicans, scored 75 percent and 68 percent, respectively. Rep. Paul Wesselhoft, a Republican, got 60 percent, the county's lowest mark.

Two of our senators, Jonathan Nichols, a Republican, and John Sparks, a Democrat, scored 83 percent. Kathleen Wilcoxson, a Republican, scored 76 percent. Two of the top legislative leaders -- Senate Co-President Pro Tem Glenn Coffee and House Speaker Lance Cargill -- received "D" grade. Senate Co-President Pro-Tem Mike Morgan got a perfect rating.
