Gun control is necessary, and not anything new

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

It has been amusing for the past few weeks to read the comments about my satire on gun control published on Feb. 10 in the Transcript, not to mention the positive and negative phone calls I’ve received. Satire is something not everyone can understand.

Lewis Carroll (pseudo-name) was arrested for his allegorical satire called, Alice in Wonderland While I don’t pretend to be a famous author, I try to make my argument effective by going to the absurd to point out the absurd, or as a recent reader called it,” silly”.

Let me clarify what my satire was attempting to say, for those who have trouble with literary genres.

The 2nd Amendment begins, “ A Well Regulated Militia…”. The purpose of my letter was to point out that we regulate arms now; we always have regulated arms and always will. The NRA won’t push for the deregulation of all arms so they become the regulators that they rave against!I was simply trying to point out that the 2nd amendment says that arms should be regulated. We have decided to keep the mentally ill, violent criminals and young members of our society from obtaining arms and wrecking havoc in our communities. We have decided to keep automatic weapons and other military arms like machine guns, hand grenades, mortars, RPG’s, and artillery out of the public’s hands for the good of our society. We already have regulated arms!

The question we should be asking ourselves is “to what extent should we regulate arms to maintain a peaceful society”? Where do we draw the line? Should we license weapons like we license cars, boats, fishing and hunting? Are handguns ok? Are semi-automatic assault rifles ok? Are huge magazines in weapons ok?

What weapons should we allow the public to own and operate to satisfy the 2nd Amendment call for the peoples’ right to bear arms?

I hope one day, before someone you love dies by a gunshot, that we can come to a decision on these questions. Just sayin’.
