Congratulations, Selmon family

Norman — Every year, we await the announcement of Norman’s ’89er Day Parade Marshal. It’s a top-secret announcement that surprises us every year. No one makes application. There’s no lobbying. Like other volunteer pursuits in Norman, it just happens every year.

This year’s selection is another stellar one. Dewey and Kathryn Selmon and their family will ride in the carriage down Main Street at 10 a.m. April 24 in this year’s parade. They’re a natural selection.

They came to OU in the 1970s. Dewey was part of the trio of football-playing Selmon brothers from Eufaula. Kathryn was a journalism major from Texas. After college, he played professional football and then they moved to Norman to start a family.

Kathryn and Dewey had four children — Zac, Shannon, Megan and Lauren — then adopted Adam, Gabrielle and Christiana — from war-torn Liberia. They’re a great family that always seems to put the needs of others ahead of their own.
