NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
Thank you for your Aug. 25, 2010, coverage of the rescue of two kittens from a Norman storm sewer line.
Hands Helping Paws founder Kim Fairbanks began attempts to rescue the kittens Sunday night and, with the assistance of Norman city employees, the rescue was successful.
Saturday, Aug. 21, was International Homeless Animals day.
This is a day designated by the International Society for Animal Rights to heightening awareness of the American tragedy of pet overpopulation and the subsequent inundation of the nation’s animal shelters and sanctuaries.
An important tactic for reducing this problem is the spaying and neutering of companion animals.
There are a number of terrific organizations in addition to Hands Helping Paws in the Norman area that provide assistance to homeless animals.
Heartland Rabbit Rescue, Wildcare, Second Chance, Blue Hawk, Norman Animal Shelter and Mindy’s Memory Primate Shelter are some that come to mind.
Help them out, in addition to assisting the animal folks, you may find it changes your life in ways you never imagined.
Please adopt from a shelter. If you can’t adopt ... then foster. If you are unable to do either .... then volunteer. If none of those are options for you ... donate to your local shelters and rescue organizations.
If possible, do all of these things.
Most importantly, be sure to spay/neuter companion animals. This helps reduce the risk that there will be kittens that need rescuing.
