NORMAN — We knew it would happen some time soon, but you can never be too confident.
The OU Sooners’ 800th football win came Saturday night on Owen Field.
The Sooners escaped Utah State 31-24. It wasn’t pretty, but it sure beat last year’s opener against another Utah school.
The Sooners started playing football in 1895, albeit their first game against Oklahoma City University ended in a rout. It wasn’t until the next season that they defeated Norman High School in 1896.
The Sooners join an elite group of schools whose teams have produced 800 wins. Oklahoma sits in eighth place.
Why do such teams find success when other similar programs don’t?
It may have to do with keeping coaching staffs in place.
OU has had an amazing run of successful coaches who see their missions as more than just winning next week’s game.
They seem more intent on building championship programs, which will eventually lead to those wins.
Congratulations to the Sooners on No. 800.
