NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
Much has been written about the building of mosque near Ground Zero. The Mayor of New York claims that to stop the building of a mosque would be an act of intolerance. However, this same administration has banned the rebuilding of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which was destroyed on 9/11. This church has been at that location for many years. What kind of tolerance is it when a building dedicated to the religion of those who committed this most horrible act is allowed and the rebuilding of a Christian Church that was destroyed by this horrible act of terrorism is denied? Ground Zero is hallowed ground, blessed by the blood of those who died on that day. The men who destroyed the Twin Towers were acting in the name of their religious beliefs. To allow a mosque dedicated to that same religion while denying the rebuilding of a Christian church destroyed by those men cannot be justified.
There is no doubt that the building of the mosque on that site is legal, but it is an insult to the memory of the courageous men and women who died on that tragic day. Let the Imam who stated that 9/11 was caused by the actions of America find another location for his building and allow the Greek Orthodox Diocese rebuild their Temple.
