All in for the Timberwolves

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — The Norman North football team’s run at a state title is one for the history books. The team, which began playing a year after Norman North opened in 1997, has never advanced so far toward a state title in football.

Tonight, all roads out of Norman will lead to Stillwater, where the Timberwolves take on Jenks at 7:30 p.m. at Boone Pickens Stadium. North students, teachers, alumni, parents and fans are expected to take their “all-in” game to the Jenks Trojans. Fifteen charter buses will make a statement when they roll into Stillwater.

The game tonight also raises the question of why districts like Jenks, Owasso, Broken Arrow and Tulsa Union don’t split into multiple high schools. Districts like Norman, Moore, Edmond, Putnam City and Lawton have split into two and three high schools.

The school boards make that decision and, to date, are content with high schools with up to 4,500 students. It limits the opportunities for students far beyond athletics.

As Transcript prep writer Corbin Hosler has chronicled, Coach Wade Standley’s team has defied the odds in postseason wins over Southmoore, Broken Arrow and Owasso.

The superintendents of Norman and Moore had a friendly wager involving wearing each other’s jerseys on tonight’s game. A more meaningful wager tonight might be for Jenks to split into three high schools if they lose.
