Veterans given great tribute

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

I just wanted to tell you about a wonderful tribute our veterans current and present received at Truman Elementary School. Rep. Scott Martin and Mayer Cindy Rosenthal were also in attendance, along with I would estimate well in excess of 50 veterans.

I sometimes think that our young people don’t think much of our veterans, but this assembly really proved me wrong.

They put on a great tribute to our men and women, present and past, who served in uniform. They showed great enthusiasm and patriotism with skits and readings, and later after the presentation, they were asking us veterans for our autographs.

Certainly I am no hero, with all my service both active and reserve being here in the USA. But that didn’t matter on this day as all were honored.

All the veterans lined up on the stage while their military song was played, and each of us gave our name, rank and where we served in the military. The colors were posted by Air Force ROTC cadets from one of the other schools.

Also, I can’t say thank you enough to the school leadership doing this and for being asked by invitation to attend. I have always been proud to be a veteran, but this action by our school system here in Norman really reinforced my pride. It was just great to see these young future citizens of our nation pay tribute to the veterans, past and present, who made this nation great.
