Frank Coulter: 1937-2013

NORMAN — The death of longtime educator and civic leader Frank S. Coulter this past week leaves a tremendous leadership void in Norman. He was the definition of a servant leader, always willing to make time for students, coworkers and the various organizations he chose to work with.

He was chosen as an Army sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknown in Arlington Cemetery. He was working at a vo-tech school in Kansas when he and Sheryl made the choice to come to Norman. In his 24 years at the Moore-Norman Technology Center, Mr. Coulter helped build the school into a dynamic institution with a statewide and national reputation for quality and responsiveness to the needs of employers.

He supervised five expansions at the campus and, with his board, had the vision for a campus in south Oklahoma City. His ability to bring together two major school districts with students feeding into the technology center was exemplary. Few entities have managed to achieve such harmony between Norman and Moore. In many ways, the school was a unifying element for the county.

A scholarship has been established through the MNTC Foundation. With his family, we mourn his loss, all the while knowing Norman is a richer community because of Mr. Coulter.
