Norman — AT&T has joined other wireless carriers and AAA in asking drivers to stop sending and receiving text messages while driving. “No text is worthy dying over,” one advertisement reads. The campaign is called, “It can wait.”
Laws banning texting and driving have been passed in several states. Oklahoma has not passed such legislation. Some states require hands-free devices.
Texting and driving is unlike other distractions. It’s not like drinking a soft drink or sipping coffee. Texting while driving takes concentration away from driving and has caused serious accidents.
“It can wait” will have to start with young drivers who send multiple texts and often seem more adept at those small keyboards. AT&T started a text safety awareness campaign in September 2009.
Many governmental entities and state agencies have now banned texting and driving. Like seat belts and door locks, it’ll become part of a driver’s safety routine. Until then, read that last text message on your phone. Is that worth dying over?
