Betty Jean Sevedge Ross, 80, of Oklahoma City died Monday, Feb. 25, at her home. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Spring Creek Baptist Church, 11701 N. MacArthur Blvd., Oklahoma City, with burial that afternoon at 2 in Greenhill Cemetery, Lindsay. Pastor Preston Clegg will lead the service.
Mrs. Ross was born Jan. 26, 1928, in Lindsay, to Clinton Vasco and Virginia Earnest Sevedge. She graduated from Lindsay High School in 1946. After graduation from high school she attended OCW in Chickasha and then worked for the American Exchange Bank in Lindsay before marrying Jimmy Ross in 1948. They farmed in the Alex and Bradley area for eight years before returning to Lindsay. Daughter Janie was born in 1952, and son Jimmy Kent was born in 1956. In the mid-1960s, Betty returned to the then OCLA to complete her degree in English, before teaching in the Hughes, Pauls Valley, and ultimately Lindsay High Schools. While teaching in Lindsay she completed her master's degree in library science from OU. She retired from teaching in 1987. After retirement, she and Jimmy built a home in Norman where they lived from 1988 until she moved to Oklahoma City in 2003.
Betty was a member of Spring Creek Baptist Church and during her few years as a member there helped establish a church library/media center. She loved her country and was involved in DAR, Daughters of the Confederacy, the Democratic Party of Oklahoma and League of Women Voters. She also was a member of Kappa Kappa Iota and Delta Kappa Gamma teacher sororities, Galaxy Writers' Club of Norman, for which she wrote a monthly grammar column, First Ladies Investment Club and several book review clubs. Her interests included enjoyment of her grandchildren, reading good literature, attending plays and concerts, travel and intelligent conversation wherever she could find it.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Earnest English Sevedge; father, Clinton Vasco Sevedge; sister Mary Ann Sevedge Hamilton; brother Jack Burse Sevedge; and husband Jimmy R. Ross.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Janie and Walter Diaz of Maben, Miss.; her son Kent Ross of Oklahoma City; grandchildren Ryan and Laura Ross of Moore, Riley Ross and fianc?e Carmen Branscum of Oklahoma City, Derek and Ashley Diaz of Maben; a sister-in-law; two nephews; two nieces; several great-nephews and a great-niece.
