Robert E. Manchester

Robert E. Manchester died as the result of injuries sustained in a car accident on Saturday, June 3.

Mr. Manchester was born in Springfield, Mass., to William Raymond Manchester and Sallie Rambeau Thompson on June 14, 1936. After his father's untimely death, the family moved to Attleboro, Mass., in January 1941. He and his mother moved to Oklahoma City where he lived until he joined the Marine Corps at age 17. After a short stint in Korea, Mr. Manchester returned to Oklahoma and graduated from Central State University in Edmond in 1962. While campaigning for Bill Atkinson for governor, he met Ginann and they were married in August 1963. He received his law degree from Oklahoma City University and began practicing law in 1967. Throughout his law career, Mr. Manchester represented the Oklahoma City Fraternal Order of Police, Otis Elevators, and others. Next to his family and OU football, his love for the law and its representation were the driving forces in his life.

Mr. Manchester is survived by his wife Ginann; his children Diane Manchester Drum and her husband Jon Drum of Norman, Michael Robert Manchester of Houston, and Amy Ann Manchester of Santa Monica, Calif. He was a proud grandfather to his "two fantastic grandchildren," Jackson and Meagan Drum of Norman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, author and historian William R. Manchester, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church. Father Tom Boyer will preside with Deacon Byron Jacobson assisting. Additional speakers will be Bud Miles, U.S. District Court Judge Lee West, and P.D. Taylor.

The Oklahoma City Police Department Honor Guard will serve as official bearers, with Robert A. Manchester, Max Newberry, Bud Miles, Tom Johnson, Clayton Lee, Jim Caldwell, Thomas K. Edwards, Jr., Thomas K. Edwards III, Bud Hebert and Rick Healey serving as honorary bearers. Burial with graveside military rights by the United States Marine Corps will follow at Warren Cemetery in Norman. Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.

Following the services, friends and family will hold an Irish wake celebrating his life through stories and memories.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Oklahoma City Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 123, 1624 S. Agnew, Oklahoma City, OK, 73108; US Marine Corps Coordinating Council of OK, 1420 Evergreen Cr., Midwest City, OK, 73110; and the University of Oklahoma Sooner Club, 180 W. Brooks, Ste. 3575, Norman, OK 73019.
