Loree Elizabeth White

NORMAN — Loree Elizabeth White, 101, of Norman, died March 9, 2013, at Norman Specialty Hospital. She was born March 5, 1912, to Clarence Stokes and Lola B. (Wilden) White in Dallas.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the First Christian Church in Norman. Loree will be buried next to her husband at Fairlawn Cemetery in Oklahoma City.

She moved to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1917 and survived the flu of 1918. She then moved to Oklahoma City in 1919. She graduated from Classen High School in 1929, where she served as class vice president and was on the Rainbow Drill Team.

Loree attended OCU in 1930 and, in 1931, graduated from Columbia Christian College in Missouri, where she was the anchor woman on the swim team. She got her BA from OU in 1933 and taught at Jackson Middle School in Oklahoma City. She was a life-long member of the Gamma Phi Beta at OU. She received her MA at OU in 1963 and received a scholarship to Laval University in Quebec, Canada.

She moved to Norman in 1957 and taught Spanish, French and English at Southeast High School until 1973. She was president of the State Language Teachers Association, Cleveland County Retired Teachers Association, Sorosis Club, CWF, Al Anons, Normandy Garden Club and Macular Degeneration. She was a deaconess and elder at the First Christian Church in Norman.

She traveled to 70 countries and took students to Mexico and Spain. Loree was an OU wrestling fan and started the Jimmie White Award, named after her husband, for the wrestler who made the most contribution to the team.

She is survived by her three sons and their families, Rev. Dr. James Wilden White, wife Pattie, daughters Mellissa and Cherilynn and her daughters Halley and Lauren; Charles Frederick White, daughters Amber Rose, Kimberley and Jennifer Loree and her daughter Melissa Loree and her daughter Allissa Loree; and Robert Clarence Sevier White, wife Yang Jun, daughter Lolise Jun and son Yangzi Sevier.

The family has suggested the First Christian church of Norman, 229 S. Webster Ave., Norman, OK 73069, as appropriate for memorial contributions.

Services have been entrusted to the care of Primrose Funeral Service.
