NORMAN — George Mauldin Sr., 78, of Lexington, died at his home Tuesday Jan. 22, 2013.
Services will be 10 a.m Saturday at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Purcell.
He was born May 24, 1934, in Oklahoma City. He was the fifth child of eight children born to Manon Mauldin and Gladys (Campbell) Mauldin. George grew up in south Oklahoma City and attended Capitol Hill Schools. At the age of 18, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and served in the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C. during the Korean Conflict. After serving three years, he was honorably discharged and returned home to Oklahoma, settling in Norman. While living in Norman he met and later married the love of his life, Mary Spor. They were married on May 4, 1956, and this past year celebrated 56 years of marriage.
One of George’s first jobs was working as a carpenter. In 1962, he went to work for the Norman Police Dept. and retired in 1983 as captain. He then worked five years as the Norman Civil Defense Director and, in 1988, he went to work as undersheriff for Cleveland County, retiring in 1993.
Throughout his life, George loved being in the outdoors where he could hunt and fish. He was an avid sportsman and was a life-long member of the NRA. He and Mary enjoyed fishing at Lake Texoma, camping and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Manon and Gladys Mauldin; two brothers, Frank “Bud” Mauldin and James Mauldin; one sister, Bonnie Cox and husband Paul; and two brothers-in-law, Raymond Spor and Danny Dennis.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Mauldin of the home; one son,George Mauldin Jr. and wife Kerry of Norman; one daughter; Linda Mauldin of Lexington; two brothers, Leroy Mauldin and wife Vanessa of Gainesville, Texas, and Jeffrey Mauldin and wife Susan of Norman; two sisters, Louise Rodriquez and husband Stan of Midwest City and Alice Lessly and husband Bob of Norman; two brothers-in-law, Leroy Spor and wife Emma Lou of Norman and Carl Spor and wife Brenda of Lexington; one sister-in-law, Margie Dennis of Noble; one grandson, Joshua Mauldin; three stepgrandchildren, Kennedy Shahan, Layton and Landon Mayhue; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends
Interment will be at the Lexington Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
