Sidney Merle Ohmart

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Sidney Merle Ohmart, 77, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at his residence in Norman. He was born in Enid on Dec. 29, 1935, to Charles Merle and Lelia Ohmart.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Havenbrook Funeral Home chapel in Norman.

He attended Enid public schools and graduated from Enid High School in 1953. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1957 with a bachelor’s degree in English. He later graduated from Central State College in Edmond with a master’s degree in education. Sidney taught English for many years at Northwest Classen High School in Oklahoma City. He also taught English for several years at Wantagh, Long Island, N.Y. He later taught English at Tulsa Junior College.

For the past several years, Sidney had the position of housefather, chapter advisor and student counselor for the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity at the University of Oklahoma. This was a job he prized and loved above all others.

Sidney was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Bernice Ohmart; his stepsister, Shirley Williamson; and a step-nephew, Richard Williamson.

He is survived by his two step-nephews, James Williamson and his wife Sandra and Thomas Williamson, all of Tulsa. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Arrangements for Sidney and his family were placed in the care of the Vice family at Havenbrook Funeral Home.
