Roger Mackey Tarman

NORMAN — Roger Mackey Tarman, 85, died Saturday, March 16, 2013, in Princeton Care Center. Roger was born in Kansas City, Mo., on Nov. 10, 1927, along with his twin sister, Harriet Tarman Remmers, who predeceased him in 1989.

A memorial service will be 5 p.m. Saturday at the Blackwell Memorial Home, 21 N. Main St. in Pennington. A memorial celebration will be hosted at his home in Pennington immediately following the service.

He was a treasured child of Fred E. and Billie Tarman, growing up in Norman, where his father was the publisher and editor of The Norman Transcript. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1950 with a Bachelor of Music. He was a legacy member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity at the University of Oklahoma. In 1959, he was awarded both a Master of Library Science and a Master of Arts from University of California in Berkeley.

Following a position at Berkeley, Roger moved to New York to become chief music and art librarian at the Brooklyn Public Library. In 1966, Roger moved to New Jersey to begin his 35-year career with Rutgers University, where he was head of the music library at Douglass. He retired from Rutgers University in 2001.

He had a great passion for classical music, art, archeology, history and astronomy. Roger, “Pop-Pop,” will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by many loving friends and family members.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Alissa and Vince Stevens of Ocean Park, Wash.; his daughter, Ariana Erickson and her partner Neil C. Tucker of Lawrenceville, N.J.; his son and daughter-in-law, Kerry and Keri Anne Tarman of Westminster, Colo.; his grandson, Michael Braddock of Palmer, Alaska; his granddaughter, Andrea Leonard and her fiance Michael Sellers of Philadelphia; his grandson, Jack Tarman of Westminster, Colo.; his granddaughter, Hannah Tarman of Westminster, Colo.; his great-granddaughter, Jordyn Wells of Philadelphia; his brother-in-law, Richard Remmers of Oklahoma City; his niece, Marilyn Remmers Lehman of Tulsa; his niece, Elaine Remmers Cook of Phoenix; and his nephew, Neil Remmers of Dallas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Pennington First Aid Squad, the University of Oklahoma or to the charity of your choice.
