Otis Lee Cox

NORMAN — Otis Lee Cox, age 83, of Norman, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at the South Park East Nursing Home in Oklahoma City, from a broken heart exactly one week to the day after losing his wife of more than 56 years, Mrs. Agnes Belle Cox, on Valentine’s Day.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Havenbrook Funeral Home chapel, 3401 Havenbrook St. in Norman.

Otis Lee Cox was born April 18, 1929 in Grimes, Okla., the son of Thomas Carter and Thelma Leona (Brewer) Cox.

Otis and Agnes spent the last five years of their life together battling Alzheimer’s disease after they were diagnosed within one week of each other. Though it’s difficult to lose our parents within one week of each other, it’s only appropriate that they ended their earthly journey together, be reunited at Heaven’s Gate and begin their eternal walk with the Lord together.

Otis attended public schools in Berlin, Okla., graduating from Berlin High School in 1946. He served in the United States Army for a brief time before being honorably discharged. He then enrolled at Kansas State University, completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. Otis continued his college education, completing a master’s in Business Administration from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.

Otis was united in marriage to the love of his life, Miss Agnes Belle Hutchinson, on May 6, 1956, in Billings, Mont. Otis was employed with Sandia Laboratory in Albuquerque, N.M., as an auditor for 31 years before retiring in 1994. While living in Albuquerque, Otis served on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Albuquerque.

A perfectionist by nature, Otis enjoyed gardening and was an extremely focused and dedicated individual to his family and his career.

After their retirement, Otis and Agnes moved to Norman in 1994, where they both were charter members of the Bridgeview United Methodist Church, with Otis serving as the church treasurer for many years. They both enjoyed traveling the United States of America, also visiting Australia and New Zealand. Otis thoroughly enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s ball games and all of their sporting activities. He simply enjoyed being at home with Agnes and having the free time to spend with his family.

Otis was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Agnes, on February 14, 2013; an infant sister; three additional sisters, Ruth Isch, Rita Fern Cox, and Retha Cox; and one brother, Kenneth James Cox.

Survivors include his two daughters, Cindy Blanton of Norman and Audrey Akers and her husband, Steve, of West Lafayette, Ind.; five grandchildren, Mike Cochran, Jr., and his wife, Sue of Norman, Barry Blanton of Norman, Scott Blanton and his wife, Edrienne of Ft. Worth, Texas, Tiffany Ouellette and her husband, Paul of Hoover, Ala., and John Davis of St. Louis, Mo,; eight great-grandchildren, Jenni Cochran, Michael Cochran, III, Codie Cochran, Reese Blanton, Taylor Blanton, Alexandira Ouellette, Bella Ouellette and Kane Ouellette.

Otis and Agnes will be laid to rest on the same day at the Grandview Cemetery in Ft. Collins, Colo., an ending to two great lives and one amazingly true love story.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Mr. Otis Lee Cox to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Norman, 502 East Main Street, Norman, OK 73071.

Arrangements for Otis and his family were placed in the care of the Vice family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
