Rev. Walter C. Quoetone

NORMAN — Rev. Walter C. Quoetone, 58, Norman, embarked on his next amazing journey on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, in Oklahoma City with family and friends by his side.

Rev. Alvin Deer officiated the prayer service at Billy Hooton Memorial United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, where Walter was the current pastor.

Rev. Phil Jones officiated the funeral on Nov. 3 at Centenary UMC in Lawton. Walter was buried at the Mt. Scott KCA Cemetery in the sunset shadows of the Wichita Mountains he so loved.

Walter was born July 29, 1954, in Lawton to Charles and Sandra (Bear) Quoetone. He graduated from Lawton High School, Cameron University and later Southern Methodist University Perkins School of Theology, where he received his Masters of Divinity. He married Elizabeth Sohl at Mt. Scott Kiowa Church in 1977. He was an officer in the Interfaith Council at Cameron University, a diverse group of socially and spiritually focused students sponsored by the Cameron Campus Ministry. He was OIMC Conference youth president and a member of the Youth Choir World Tour. The six weeks he spent in India on a youth mission changed his life.

Walter was a member of the Kiowa Tribe and Tia-piah Society and served on the Kiowa Election Board. He was a member of Mt. Scott Kiowa UMC and a founding member of the Norman First American UMC. Walter also served as pastor for JJ Methvin Memorial UMC in Anadarko and Sherwood Tsotigh Memorial UMC in Cache.

Walter enjoyed disc golf, golfing, walking with his dogs and reading. He had a loving and generous spirit with family and friends and never turned down a request for help. He loved the KC Royals and the Oklahoma Sooners.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, William and Joy (Calisay) Bear and Guy and Nannie Susan (Sahmaunt) Quoetone; aunts Joycetta Elliott and Helen Curley; and uncles Henry William Bear and Allen Quetone.

He was so loved by his wife, Elizabeth; parents Rev. Charles and Sandra Quoetone of Lawton; brothers and sisters Aaron Quoetone, Jeanie Quoetone, Cindy Debartolo, William Quoetone, Susan Nauni and Nick Quoetone; aunts Wynema Martin and Leona Johnson; and many other family members and friends.

Donations in Walter’s memory can be made to Billy Hooton Memorial United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City or your favorite charity.
