Area Girl Scout among those to be recognized at April 19 ceremony

This year, Girl Scouts ? Western Oklahoma, Inc. will honor 119 girls with the Bronze Award, 25 girls with the Silver Award and 12 girls with the highest and most prestigious award in Girl Scouts, the Gold Award. The girls being recognized come from all over the 39-county region that GS-West serves.

Local Girl Scout Brittany Fannon, a senior at Lexington High School, is among those being recognized with a Gold Award this year.

Fannon decided to use her Gold Award project to help provide a little extra warmth and comfort to the elderly residents of the Lexington Nursing home and Rivermont Retirement community by designing and making fleece blankets to fit over their wheelchairs. With the help of her local community and fellow Girl Scouts she was able to give these residents cozy blankets.

The ceremony is an annual tradition at Girl Scouts and will be held April 19 at 3 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Conference Center, 2501 Conference Drive in Norman. Keynote speakers will be OU basketball players Danielle Robinson and Carlee Roethlisberger. Serving as emcee will be Marika Lorraine from KFOR, News Channel 4.

The Gold Award is a national award signifying outstanding accomplishments in areas of leadership, community service, career planning and personal development.

Girls who achieve their Gold Award have worked strenuously on a project of their choice. The project is something that fulfills a need within a girl's community (whether local or global), creates change, and it is hoped, is something that becomes ongoing.

This year's awards ceremony will be preceded by the first Girl Scouts-Western Oklahoma Alumni Luncheon from noon-2 p.m. Anyone who has been, or still is a Girl Scout is invited to attend this luncheon and join the GS-West Alumni.

Those interested in attending the alumni luncheon should call the council office at 528-3535 or 800-698-0022, or visit www.gswestok.org.
