Instead of using a sleigh this year, Santa Claus will use the Reindeer Express to provide Christmas gifts for patients spending the holiday season in Norman's mental health facilities.
"Our community will remember this holiday tradition began 32 years ago as Operation Reindeer," said Renee Mixon, Reindeer Express chair. "Now sponsored by the National Association for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) Cleveland County, a United Way of Norman member agency, our goal is to remember the hospitalized mentally ill and bring them all the traditional aspects of the season including favorite carols, home-baked treats, holiday parties, beautiful decorations and exchanging of gifts."
Mixon said NAMI Cleveland County will provide money to help purchase gifts this holiday season for the patients of Griffin Memorial Hospital, the Norman Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center and the Norman Adolescent Center, as well as hosting holiday parties for the Oklahoma Youth Center and Griffin Memorial Hospital.
Monetary contributions to help purchase gifts for the patients who will be hospitalized on Christmas morning are desperately needed, Mixon said.
Checks should be made payable to "NAMI Cleveland County" and mailed to Reindeer Express, in care of NAMI Cleveland County, 1171 E. Main St., Norman, OK, 73071. All donations are tax deductible.
"Most of us look forward to spending the holidays with family and friends," Mixon added. "But the holiday season is not so easy for those who are sick, away from family and friends, or for those who no longer have families. Your kindness can make many lonely people, who might not otherwise be remembered, feel very special this Christmas."
