Norman couple celebrates 50th wedding anniversary

NORMAN — Kathleen Marie O’Leary and Harold L. Heiple met in Norman and were married in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Nov. 24, 1962. At that time, Kathy was a nurse in Haddock Clinic and Harold was a practicing attorney.

All three of their children, Larua, Greg and Scott, were born in Norman, as were two of their five grandchildren. Laura is an educator in California and Greg and Scott are in business in Norman.

Kathy has volunteered as a Red Cross nurse, school nurse, parish nurse and school patron. She is best known for being founder of Health for Friends, a non-profit medical clinic for low-income families. She served as its volunteer director for 14 years. In 1992, the first President Bush named her as one of his “Thousand Points of Light.”

Harold has practiced law in Norman since their marriage, and has served on the Norman City Council and as an acting municipal judge in 1966. Both Kathy and Harold have served on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations in Norman.

The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary early by taking their children and grandchildren on a cruise to Alaska in August.

Both are active in St. Thomas More Parish in Norman. Each one says, “As long as the mind and body hold out, we will be active in Norman because it has been a wonderful home for us.”
