LAWTON — There's always next year.
Jamie Myers scored on an 85-yard punt return, but that was all the fire Norman High could muster Friday night at Cameron Stadium as the Tigers fell to Lawton Eisenhower 31-6.
NHS fell to 2-8 and1-6 in district play. Ike finished the season 3-7 and 2-5 in District 6A-2.
Myers was the bright spot on a tough night for the Tigers, catching three passes for 26 yards. Freshman Donovan Roberts also excelled in his short stint in the backfield, rushing five times for 30 yards.
But it was the turnovers that killed all momentum NHS could muster, as the Tigers threw three interceptions and fumbled the ball away twice.
“We had too many turnovers again,” NHS coach Greg Nation said. “We’re real proud of our seniors. We hope that your younger guys learned some things, and we hope to be better next year.”
Eisenhower standout wide receiver Greg Everidge caught seven passes for 107 yards to lead the Eagles to a season-ending win.
“Everything always tastes sweeter after a victory,” Ike head coach Boone Copeland said.
In all, Ike had 257 total yards to NHS’ 125.
Ike got 144 of those on the ground, 113 in the air.
It was mostly the underclassmen that made the night a success for the seniors, as sophomore Louis Durant led the Eagles in rushing with 18 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown in the second quarter. Junior Dominique Pratt finished with 20 yards, but scored Ike’s first touchdown in the first quarter. Ike’s sophomore kicker Colton Rancourt also hit a 33-yard field goal.
Ike even got a touchdown from a sophomore defensive lineman. In the third quarter, Marty Northern intercepted a pass from Chad Anderson and ran it in for a 5-yard score.
It was a show for the sparse crowd in attendance, with the interception returned for a score, a punt returned for a touchdown, and a clinic put on by the leading receiver in Class 6A.
Everidge finished his final season with 962 receiving yards, just shy of the 1,000 mark he was hoping to get.
Ike put the game to rest when junior Daryus Jenkins took a hand-off 55 yards to score in the fourth quarter.
