Jags get a new coach

MOORE — In a special meeting held Tuesday night, the Moore School board approved the hiring of Chad Davis as the new head football coach at Westmoore by a vote of 3-0.

Davis has only been with the Jaguars since March, when former Westmoore coach Mike Whaley, added him to the staff. But he was able to make a strong impression on school district officials.

“He has a number of coaching accomplishments,” Moore Schools superintendent Deborah Arato said. “And he brings a lot of good experience.”

Davis has had several coaching stints around the state before coming to Westmoore. He served as offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz until 2006. He was then hired to coach the wide receivers at the University of Central Oklahoma before being promoted to offensive coordinator. His last stop was at Capitol Hill last year, where just taught school.

“The last place he coached was at UCO,” Whaley said. “There was a coaching change and Davis got caught in the switch when Chuck Langston stepped down. He didn’t coach football last year.”

Davis played his high school football for Palm Springs (Calif.) High School, where he graduated in 1992 as the all-time high-school passing yardage leader in the state with more than 9,000 yards. He then signed with Oklahoma.

After serving as a backup to quarterback Cale Gundy, Davis transferred to Washington State in 1993.

In 1994, Davis led the Cougars to an 8-4 record and an Alamo Bowl victory over Baylor. However, after starting 21 career games for WSU, Davis was benched the next season by coach Mike Price. He was replaced by Ryan Leaf.

Whaley, who left Westmoore to join the OSSAA, said Davis’ offensive knowledge will help the Jaguars as they make the transition to the spread. In Whaley’s final season, the Jags went 5-5 and made the postseason, but many of the teams in the area had already made the move to more wide-open offenses.

“His mind is extremely beneficial for those kids,” Whaley said. “He played D-1 football as a quarterback and has been around great offenses. You have to think working with quarterbacks will be helpful.”

Davis will teach social sciences at Westmoore and will be paid a stipend of $10, 374 to coach football. He said he is excited to take over a program with the stature of the Jaguars.

“The Westmoore football program is in great shape,” Davis said. “I can’t say enough good things about Whaley. I just want to carry on the tradition and attitude that Westmoore already has.”

The Moore school board also voted unanimously to hire Scott Hodges as the Jaguars’ new head basketball coach. Hodges had been an assistant under former coach Robert Foreman, who left to take over the girls basketball program at Mustang.

Hodges will teach at Westmoore and will be paid a stipend of $7,490 to coach basketball.
