Chamber encourages people to run for council

Special to the Transcript

Norman has eight members on its city council, each serving a term of two years. This year the even numbered wards are up for election: Wards 2, 4, 6 and 8. The filing period is Jan. 11-13, 2010, and the council election will be March 2, 2010.

The Chamber Get Out The Vote (GOTV) Committee believes that the Norman city council is strengthened with more and more diverse business experience in this governing body. The responsibilities of the Norman city council affect every business in Norman, and businesses in Norman, through their retail sales, provide the lion's share of the city's revenue.

Think you might want to run for the City Council? The Chamber's GOTV committee is offering a tutorial on the city council election process called "Council Elections 101" 5:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 7 in Room A of the Norman Public Library, 225 N. Webster Ave. Basics of the job, from the responsibilities to the time commitment required, media relations and the basics of mounting an effective campaign for elected office will be covered. In an hour and a half, the committee hopes to provide enough information on the opportunities and the challenges to enable potential candidates to decide whether to file for office in January.

While the committee encourages people to run, understand that that the chamber does not endorse any candidates. Its bylaws prevent it from doing so.
