NORMAN — Paul Massad, vice president emeritus and senior associate vice president for university development at the University of Oklahoma, recently received the Lee Allan Smith Oklahoma Legacy Award from the Oklahoma Heritage Association.
The award honors an individual who has demonstrated volunteer and civic efforts that grow pride in their community, who is well-known for engaging the community in his or her efforts and who has created a legacy of pride for future generations.
The Oklahoma Heritage Association — along with Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb, Bob Burke and Smith (for whom the award is named) — presented Massad with the award Jan. 22 at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
“It is an honor to receive this Oklahoma Heritage Award, which was named for one of Oklahoma’s outstanding leaders,” Massad said. “I am so proud of our state and never hesitate to tell people about the many opportunities that exist here.”
In his 53rd year at OU, Massad is known for his commitment to students, helping to ensure they remain in Oklahoma and lend their talents to the state. Massad has helped raise millions to enhance the state’s offerings and opportunities for its citizens, and his fundraising efforts contributed to the Peggy and Charles Stephenson Canter Center, the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History.
Massad’s commitment and contributions have earned him such additional honors as the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication Distinguished Alumni Award and the OU Distinguished Achievement Award.
Raised in Lawton, Massad began his professional career while he was still a student at OU. He served as public information assistant and business manager of OU’s radio station and later as director of the OU Alumni Association. Massad was recognized alongside the 2012 Heritage Week student winners from across the state during the official awards ceremony at the Capitol. Lt. Gov. Lamb presented cash awards and commendations on behalf of Gov. Mary Fallin’s office.
