NORMAN — The annual Fairytale Princess prom dress giveaway is set from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Noble Public Schools Administration building, 111 S. 4th St.
Some dresses are new and some are gently used, but all are free — as well as a limited selection of shoes, purses and jewelry.
Michelle Hacker, organizer and formal dress hunter extraordinaire, says this is the fifth year for the event and her “labor of love” has really grown.
Jessica Wright, a Noble High School student, went to the dress fair last year as a junior. She said she shopped for free and found a long, rust-colored, ball-gown-style dress to wear to the prom. She said she liked the event.
“It made it real easy for my family for me to go to prom,” Wright said. “They had a ton of dresses — a style for everyone.”
Wright added that there was a variety of sizes and accessories.
Wright is planning to go shop again this year and has a word of advice for others who are dress shopping: Check out the dress fair first before spending a lot of money. Saving money enables students to “afford other things, like dinner, before prom.”
Noble High junior Denise Albertson found a dress to wear to prom last year as a sophomore. Albertson said her choice was a strapless, black, floor-length dress with a white accent at the bottom.
“I liked it (the dress fair). It was really organized, and they had it set up where it wasn’t too crowded and it was comfortable to try things on,” Albertson said. “I would recommend it. It’s great.”
Like Wright, Albertson said she saved money last year and she’s planning to go back this year,
Erin Awtry was a senior last year and said she shopped for free at the dress fair, too.
“I thoroughly enjoyed it,” Awtry said. “It is a good deal for my family in the midst of senior year when a lot of things come up.”
Awtry said there was a decent selection of dresses at the fair “and it helped make prom expenses easier to bear. The ladies were absolutely wonderful.”
Awtry’s selection was light pink, A-line dress with a corset back. It was bedazzled with jewelry and beading.
“It fit right and it was absolutely beautiful,” Awtry said.
Year after year, Hacker makes a difference by helping girls save money on prom dresses. The dress giveaway event is open to all girls.
Hacker said the girls do not need to be Noble students, but she asks that they be a student attending the prom.
Over the years, Hacker said she’s had students at the event from Noble, Little Axe, Lexington, Purcell and Norman.
