Baby Boot Camp starting soon

NORMAN — Baby Boot Camp, a workout program for new mothers, will be hosting a grand opening celebration for its Norman location Thursday, from 5:45 to 7 p.m., at the covered pavilion in Andrews Park.

Classes will be offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m. at Andrews Park, beginning this Friday. Classes also will be offered on Thursday evenings at 5:45.

Available in more than 150 cities nationwide, Baby Boot Camp offers a unique 55-minute workout designed specifically to help new moms get back into shape after having a baby. The format combines strength-training exercises with cardiovascular drills. This boot camp-style formula increases strength and tones muscles while boosting energy levels and increasing cardiovascular endurance. Most classes are held outdoors, and moms bring their babies in strollers or joggers as an integral part of the workout.

“Women are finally realizing the benefits of strength training to increase weight loss and improve muscle tone,” said Kristen Horler, ACE certified personal trainer and Baby Boot Camp CEO and founder. “But Baby Boot Camp is not just about looking good. It’s about feeling great and having the energy, strength and stamina you need to keep up with the intense physical demands of being a mom.”

In addition to offering a workout, studies have shown that exercising with other new moms can help alleviate the postpartum Baby Blues.

In fact, a recent study in The International Journal of Nursing showed that mothers in a stroller-based fitness program, like Baby Boot Camp, significantly reduced their symptoms of depression compared to those who attended a support group.

Sarah Smith, a certified personal trainer and new mother, is bringing the national franchise to Norman.

“I’ve lived in Norman for four years, and fitness has always been an important part of my lifestyle,” she said. “I am excited to bring the Baby Boot Camp program to this community.”

Baby Boot Camp also offers discussions after class and “mom’s night out” activities, Smith said.

“Baby Boot Camp offers fitness and friendship to moms who are generally in the same stage of life and can relate to the new challenges and joys of mommyhood,” she said. “These classes offer time to get fit, fellowship with other moms and time with your baby or toddler.

“What other 55 minute activity could incorporate all of these great things?”
