City offers to make warrants disapper

The City of Norman announced a municipal warrant amnesty program Thursday that will serve as a forgiveness program for individuals with certain warrants in the city's Municipal Court.

The program will begin Tuesday and run through Jan. 29, 2010, giving those with certain warrants a limited opportunity to resolve them without fear of being placed in jail.

Only individuals with warrants are eligible.

Municipal Court Administrator Ronda Guerrero said "a warrant may be issued for an individual's arrest if he or she failed to appear in court for a scheduled court date or if he or she failed to pay all fines and costs assessed by the judge."

All fines assessed on failure to appear charges will be waived by the Norman Municipal Court during the amnesty period, although the fines and costs related to the underlying charges will not be waived. Participation in the amnesty program will create a minimum savings of $285 for each defendant charged with failure to appear, the city says.

During the amnesty period, defendants may appear in person at the Municipal Court and resolve the warrant by either paying any outstanding fines and costs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding holidays), or for those who cannot pay immediately, seeing a judge at 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Payments can be made by cash, money order, cashier's check, or by credit or debit card (MasterCard or Visa only). No personal checks will be accepted on outstanding municipal warrants.

To find out if you have any outstanding warrants, check the City of Norman's Web site at www.ci.norman.ok.us. The Web site lists outstanding warrants from July 2000 to present.

If you received a warrant before July 2000 or have other questions, call Municipal Court at 366-5325.

The Norman Municipal Court is at 201-B W. Gray St.
