A football season that took Oklahoma on a winding road of injuries, disappointments and a little late-season success against its in-state rival will end with another road trip to Texas.
The destination, however, is not one they've visited recently. The Sooners were invited Sunday to El Paso, Texas, and the Sun Bowl, where they will face off against No. 19 Stanford Dec. 31. The game kicks off at 1 p.m.
It's OU's third time to play in the Sun Bowl and their first trip there since 1993.
"We're excited about it. I'm sure it will be a great experience," OU coach Bob Stoops said Sunday afternoon. "We're going to play an excellent football team in Stanford. I'm sure it will be a great experience and a good challenge as well."
One positive benefit for Sooner fans is ticket prices are inexpensive compared to many other bowl games, with prices ranging from $15 to $60. By comparison, remaining seats available for the Cotton Bowl in Dallas were listed at $250 apiece, and remaining tickets for the Holiday Bowl, another game with Oklahoma has appeared in this decade, range from $70 to $85.
The Sooners went 7-5 this season, knocking off rival Oklahoma State 27-0 in the season finale Nov. 29.
Stanford went 8-4, finishing in a tie for second place in the Pac-10 Conference. The Cardinal last played in the Sun Bowl in 1996.
OU and Stanford have met four previous times, the last in 1984, a game won by Stanford 19-7 in Norman.
