School bus rear ends car

The driver of a Norman Public School bus that rear ended another vehicle will receive a summons for not paying enough attention to the road, police said Monday.

The collision happened about 4 p.m. at the intersection of Berry Road and state Highway 9. A car was stopped at a red light on highway 9 going eastbound, Norman Police Master Officer Jennifer Newell said.

"The bus rear ended the vehicle," she said. "The driver of the car was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries."

Newell said Monday evening that the driver was expected to be given a summons.

"The driver of the bus will be receiving a summons, has not received it yet, but will be receiving a summons for failing to devote full time and attention," she said.

At the scene of the collision about 4:15 p.m. Monday, the back quarter of the white sedan was smashed in and being towed away. The bus' front bumper was damaged. Children waited on the bus while police interviewed the bus driver.

A police officer who would not give his name because he was not authorized to speak with the press said none of the children were injured and they were waiting for another bus to come pick them up.

No one at the Norman Public Schools administration building could be reached by phone after hours Monday.
