Two middle school-age children brought an air-soft pellet gun to the playground of Adams Elementary Thursday after school, according to a note sent to parents by school principal Linda Baxter.
The note states students attending the Community After School Program, a nonprofit organization that provides care for students, were rushed into the gym by site director Derek Melson.
Melson contacted the Norman Police Department and it responded.
No children were injured.
There have been discrepancies over the type of gun recovered.
A parent who witnessed part of the scene said it was a rifle pellet gun.
Despite controversy over the type of gun, Lt. Kyle Harris of the police department said it was an air-soft gun, not a traditional metal, projectile gun.
"But those can still do a lot of damage, too," said Harris in response to the rifle allegation. "I can assure you this was an air-soft gun. Parents love their kids. This was a scary thing for them."
Harris said no criminal charges were filed against the two boys, who were taken into custody and later released to their parents.
Other than being two juveniles on school property with a gun, Harris said they didn't do anything illegal.
Norman Public Schools Superintendent Joe Siano said he was not aware of the incident because it occurred after school hours.
Siano said Baxter chose to send a note home to parents after rumors began circulating over the type of gun.
Melson said he was unable to comment about the incident until it had been cleared with the executive director of CASP.
