Gas leak shuts down Robinson

By Meghan McCormick

A section of West Robinson Street was closed to traffic Thursday afternoon after a contractor accidentally cut a gas line near the Fay Avenue intersection.

The Norman Fire Department was called to the scene about 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Norman Deputy Fire Chief Jim Bailey said Robinson Street was closed to traffic for about two hours. Robinson was shut down from Flood Avenue to Peters Avenue. The street was reopened a little after 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Bailey said a contractor associated with the Robinson Street underpass project ruptured the 6-inch line. No homes or businesses were evacuated.

"Fire crews are monitoring the neighborhood north of the rupture for high levels of natural gas," Bailey said at the scene. "At this time, levels are low and the residents are being advised to keep windows closed and stay inside."

No injuries or fires were reported, he said.

Bailey said crews from Oklahoma Natural Gas shut the gas line off at 5:20 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters left the area a few minutes later.
