U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts visited the University of Oklahoma College of Law Tuesday.
"This is the first time in history that a sitting chief justice has come to Oklahoma," Dean Andrew Coats said. Roberts visited with faculty and students throughout the day.
"He dropped in unannounced on classes," Coats said. At 4 p.m., he gave the eighth annual Henry Family Lecture in the Bell Courtroom at the college. Coates said Roberts spoke about Abraham Lincoln's Supreme Court appointments. Tuesday evening, Roberts attended a reception and dinner with invited guests, including alumni.
Roberts became acquainted with Coats on a judicial exchange program, so Coats said he asked the Supreme Court justice to visit OU. Coats said OU President David Boren and Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit Robert Henry also helped bring Roberts to Norman.
The visit was part of the College of Law's Centennial Celebration, which also included a visit by Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy Oct. 1.
"Obviously having the chief justice of the United States was an enormous event," Coats said.
