Explosion victim released from hospital

A man who was burned when his RV camper exploded near a home Thursday night in Slaughterville has been released from an Oklahoma City hospital.

After the explosion, Jasper Weeks, 81, was transported to Integris Baptist Medical Center. Hospital spokesperson Brooke Cayot said Weeks was discharged from the hospital Monday morning.

Weeks suffered second-degree burns over 5 percent of his body, Cayot said. His injuries were contained to his face and hands.

Weeks, of Michigan, was visiting his brother, Louis Weeks, and staying in the RV camper. According to reports, Jasper Weeks was attempting to light a propane fueled heater when the trailer exploded. His poodle, Pepe, disappeared at the time of the explosion, but came back Friday morning.

Louis Weeks' wife, Leta, said Jasper and Pepe are recovering at the Weeks' home. Both were glad to be reunited Monday.

"Pepe is wonderful, and he's even better since he got to see his owner," Leta Weeks said. "His little face is getting well."

Leta Weeks said it will take some time for Jasper's injuries to heal.

"He's still bandaged up," she said.

Leta said she and her family were able to salvage some clothes, towels and dishes from the burned structure.

"Fortunately, we didn't have that big of a fire," she said. "It's amazing that he survived. There is nothing left of it except for the base, wheels and the floor is still there."

Leta said Jasper's nephew brought him a motor home to stay in as he recuperates.
