The Cleveland County Bar Association will pick up a prestigious honor this week.
Craig Sutter, bar president, said the organization is scheduled to receive the Hicks Epton Law Day Award Friday in Oklahoma City. The honor is awarded to county bar association that organizes outstanding law day activities.
"It's an award that is given out by the bar association every year," he said.
Law Day is celebrated May 1.
"It really is a big honor for a bar association," Sutter said.
He said the theme for the 2009 Law Day activities was the Legacy of Liberty Celebrating Lincoln's Bicentennial. The Cleveland County Bar Association sponsored a handful of events leading up to Law Day in late April and early May.
A symposium was held April 29 at Norman City Hall council chambers that included a panel of local and state judges. Sutter said in another event, Norman attorneys visited schools and discussed law topics with students.
"We also participated in the Ask a Lawyer program held in conjunction with a statewide program," Sutter said.
He said last year, the county's bar association was honored by the OBA as the Outstanding Bar Association.
Sutter, deputy director of the Oklahoma Indigent Defense System, said about 200 lawyers and judges are members of the Cleveland County Bar Association.
The award will be handed out 9 a.m. Friday when the Oklahoma Bar Association General Assembly meets at the Sheraton Hotel in Oklahoma City. Sutter will receive the award with Golda Long, who was the county bar association's president during Law Day 2009, and Law Day chair Don Pope.
Pope coordinated Law Day 2009 activities.
He said he credits the volunteers, attorneys and judges for making Law Day events successful.
"It's just an excellent bar association," Pope said. "There are a lot of great lawyers in town."
He said bar association members are conscientious about helping people in Norman.
"I think we see that reflected each day," Pope said.
