Norman Rotary selects October students of month

Brooke Elizabeth Hamilton, Norman High School, and Swathi Shankar, Norman North High School, have been named October Students of the Month by the Norman Rotary club.

The Student of the Month recognizes outstanding Norman and Norman North High School seniors who promote the objects and principles of Rotary International. Each senior chosen as a Student of the Month will be eligible for one of two $1,000 scholarships awarded to a student from each school in May 2010.

Hamilton understands how important a positive influence can be in someone's life. As a middle school youth leader at her church, she is a positive role model for younger students and always open to giving encouragement or just listening when needed. A leader at school as well, Hamilton is News Editor of Norman High's Tiger Tribune, Oklahoma Scholastic Media/Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association President, on the leadership team for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is Student Congress Historian. She is a member of Teen Advisors of Norman (T.A.N.) and NHS Varsity Pom Captain. Her parents are Chris and Lisa Hamilton.

Shankar loves working with her peers in Norman to make her community, and the state, a better place to live. Through her work with T.A.N., her goal is to help teens and children throughout the state have positive, supportive role models in their lives. In addition to T.A.N., she volunteers with Norman Regional Health Systems as a "Teen Hero." She is a member of the Norman North High School Chorale, French Club, Key Club and Norman Regional Hospital Medical Explorers. Shankar is Norman North's Senior Class President and a talented dancer. Her parents are Nathan and Mathangi Shankar.

The Norman Rotary Club, chartered May 1, 1919, is Norman's oldest service organization. The club has a diverse membership of more than 160 business and community leaders. Members meet at noon each Thursday at the First Christian Church.
