Lynx scratches child at Little River Zoo

A 3-year-old boy was taken to Norman Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after he was scratched by a European lynx at the Little River Zoo Monday afternoon.

Little River Zoo director Janet Schmid said the boy, his sister and his father were on a tour when the children wandered away toward a cat enclosure.

Schmid said the lynx, named Freya, reached through the fence and scratched the child's head and face with her paw.

"He got a few scratches on his head and the staff treated him and called the ambulance," Schmid told The Transcript Monday evening.

"He was good when he left," Schmid said of the child.

"The ambulance offered to just fix the scratches and leave him there but his father felt it would be best to take him to see the doctor. He had stopped bleeding and wasn't crying any more. I wasn't here but I did get a report from the general manager who was here."
