Norman police have arrested a Nicoma Park man accused of robbing a convenience store clerk Tuesday night and then crashing the victim's vehicle.
Norman Police spokeswoman Jennifer Newell said officers arrested Andre Lawrence Williams, 39, Tuesday night near 24th Avenue SE and Beaumont Drive, after he allegedly crashed the robbery victim's truck.
Police also searched for a white male, believed to have been an accomplice.
Newell said it was about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, when a black man and white man both walked into the Corner Store at the corner of Porter Avenue and Alameda Street at the same time. The black man allegedly robbed the clerk, demanded the keys to her pickup, took the vehicle and left eastbound on Alameda.
"The white male didn't say anything, didn't do anything, didn't talk to her and made no threats," Newell said.
She said both men left the store at the same time, but the victim never saw the white man get into the truck.
"We have no more information on the white male," she said.
Newell said the pickup was seen soon after the robbery at 24th Avenue SE and Beaumont Drive. An officer followed the pickup, and the vehicle never stopped long enough for a passenger to enter.
"The officer was behind the truck when it crashed and only one person was in it," she said. "At this point, we got the guy who did it."
Newell said the suspect was identified as Williams.
Cleveland County prosecutors filed felony charges against Williams Wednesday. He was charged with robbery with a firearm and larceny of an automobile.
According to a court affidavit, Williams allegedly robbed the store clerk with a gun. In addition to taking the clerk's vehicle, he is accused of taking $100 from the store's cash register.
The affidavit stated, after the pickup crashed, Williams was seen fleeing on foot. Officers arrested him in the back yard of a residence in the area.
"During a subsequent interview at the police department the defendant made a spontaneous admission that he had taken the money and the vehicle from the clerk and that he had crashed her vehicle," the affidavit stated.
An employee at the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office said Williams is being held at the Cleveland County Detention Center on $50,000 bond.
