Norman High School's annual Tigerpalooza will start Friday and continue through March 13.
Each year, Tigerpalooza is put on by Norman High School Student Congress to benefit a member, or organization, of the Norman community in need. Norman High students plan events to raise money for the recipient.
The event began a few years ago as benefit for Women's Cancer Research, and has grown every year since.
Some of the past recipients have been a young boy hurt in a car crash, a Norman High student who was badly burned in a gas fire and most recently, two Norman children from the Make-A-Wish organization.
Tigerpalooza began as a Battle of the Bands. It then grew to a three-day event, and as of two years ago became a full week of activities giving students, teachers and outside members of the Norman community a chance to participate in fundraisers. For Tigerpalooza 2009, Norman High Student Congress has chosen the Center for Children and Families Inc. as the recipient.
Tigerpalooza 2009's theme is "Make It Count."
Norman High School has decided to focus on CCFI's Neighborhood Centers program and the Trauma Focused Services program. The Neighborhood Centers program provides opportunities for neighborhood residents to build relationships through activities at safe neighborhood locations. The Trauma Focused Services program focuses on children with histories of trauma or abuse.
CCFI started in 1969 as a juvenile shelter that provided a safe place for youth to stay. Even though the name changed in 1972 and again in 1999, the mission to improve the lives of children has remained constant throughout the organization's nearly 40-year history. They have five programs that work to make a positive difference in children's lives.
To contact the Center for Children and Families Inc., call 364-1420, fax 364-1433, or visit the center's Web site at www.ccfinorman.org. The CCFI is at 1151 E. Main St.
The schedule of events for Tigerpalooza includes an assembly Friday, a battle of the bands Saturday, a dodgeball tournament 6 - 9 p.m. Monday at the NHS North Gym, a dinner and auction 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday at NHS Commons, a restaurant day Wednesday, a bowling night 4 - 6 p.m. March 12 at Sooner Bowling, 550 24th Ave. NW, and snow cones by Tiger Pause all day March 13.
