Ten nonprofit organizations serving the needs of children and low-income citizens in Norman will share more than $6,000 in grants from the Norman Community Foundation.
The organizations were recognized for their service to the community and presented checks at a reception Thursday at the Embassy Suites John Q. Hammons Convention Center in Norman.
"These 10 organizations play a significant role in providing a helping hand to citizens of Norman, and we are very pleased to provide funds to assist them in their important work," said Penny Voss, chair of the Norman Community Foundation. "We are confident that the grants provided will directly benefit those in need in Norman, and each of the organizations helps make this community stronger and more compassionate."
The grants are made from three funds administered by the Norman Community Foundation. The Max Weitzenhoffer Fund for Social Services provides assistance for food, shelter, clothing and other basic needs. The Anne V. Zarrow Fund for Children and Youth provides assistance to organizations working with young people in the community. The Norman Fund is a general fund to assist with unmet needs in the Norman community.
Agencies receiving grants are:
· Alameda Church of Christ, $700 from the Weitzenhoffer Fund for emergency food and utility assistance.
· Health for Friends, $525 from the Weitzenhoffer Fund for diabetes supplies.
· American Red Cross Heart of Oklahoma Chapter, $500 from the Weitzenhoffer Fund for disaster assistance
· Food and Shelter for Friends, $525 from the Weitzenhoffer Fund for congregate meals
· Meals on Wheels, $525 from the Weitzenhoffer Fund for homebound meals
· Kaleidoscope, $575 from the Zarrow Fund for supportive books and games for grieving children
· Crossroads Youth and Family Services, $1,075 from the Zarrow Fund for infant and toddler diapers
· Boy Scouts Last Frontier Council, $575 from the Zarrow Fund for summer camp programs
· United Way of Norman, $575 from the Zarrow Fund for school supplies
· Seventh-Day Adventist Church, $500 from the Norman Fund for emergency food, clothing and household items
The foundation is managed by the Communities Foundation of Oklahoma and governed by a local board of directors. The Norman Community Foundation includes more than 40 philanthropic funds established by individuals, families and organizations.
More than $200,000 in grants were awarded during the last fiscal year, with most of the funds directed by those who established the funds. Grants from the Weitzenhoffer Fund, Zarrow Fund and Norman Fund are administered by the Norman Community Foundation board of directors.
Local board members include Von Allen, Barbara Butner, Adam Cohen, Molly Crawley, Jeff Cummins, Peggy Doviak, David Eckart, Rita Flagler, Jim Gasaway, Dipankar Ghosh, Tim Hassen, Suzanne McAuley, Sassan Moghadam, David Morse, Sharon Parker, Mike Pullin, Melissa Sandefer, David Stringer, Penny Voss and John Waller.
