Commissioners call special meeting on sales tax initiative

Cleveland County Commissioners will meet 9 a.m. today to discuss and possibly take action on the resolution regarding the proposed one-fourth of one percent sales tax for the construction and operation of a new county jail.

The jail would cost a little more than $40 million and will be built on county owned property at 24th Avenue NW and Franklin Road.

Bond counsel will attend the meeting, along with assistant district attorney Dave Batton, to discuss how and why the money is needed and how to pay it off as quickly as possible, Batton said.

A citizen oversight panel also could be appointed.

The meeting, held at the Cleveland County Office Building, 201 S. Jones Ave., second floor, is open to the public.
